Total Rugby: John Kirwan

I have been living in Hong Kong for four years now and, I have to admit, in that time I have personally met more Wallaby and All Blacks (current and legends) here than I have Springboks.

Because of annual Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens, as well as the SA Association Dinner (and the recent Invictus movie) I have had the privilege of meeting South African legends such as Naas Botha, Marius Hurter, Bob Skinstad, Kobus Wiese, Butch James, as well as SA commentator and former Junior-Bok Hugh Bladen.

Given one or two names that eludes me at 00:15 in the Hong Kong morning, I can probably count the Bok legends I have met here on two hands.

On the other hand I have met numerous Assie and Kiwis (current and ex-players) here in Hong Kong mainly because of the Bledisloe Cup games in 2008 and 2010 as well as promotional events in the run-up to the 2011 Rugby Wold Cup (RWC) in New Zealand later this year.

One of these legends, John (JK) Kirwan was in Hong Kong just last week when his team Japan played hosts Hong Kong in the Asian5Nations Tournament.

I had met the RWC Winner on another previous occasion in Hong Kong when he represented the New Zealand Tourism organisation in the the build-up to RWC 2011.

And what a speaker JK is!

I caught up with Kirwan at a HSBC/ARFU coaching clinic at the HK Football Club recently and asked him some questions:

The IRB’s Total Rugby today posted the following video of JK, recorded while he was here in Hong Kong:

I took some pictures while Kirwan was here in Hong Kong:

A5N win boosts Hong Kong rankings

Hong Kong received an extra boost following their Asian 5 Nations victory over Kazakhstan as they moved up five spots in the IRB World Rankings.

First half tries by Tom McColl and Peter McKee gave Hong Kong a comfortable 20-3 half-time lead in Almaty and there was no way back for their hosts, who were reduced to 13 players after the break with two sent-off. The game ended 23-10.

Hong Kong’s win over the 2010 runners-up lifts them above Germany, Tunisia, Kenya, Poland and Korea to 32nd and their highest ranking for two years. Defeat means Kazakhstan fall to 30th.

Hong Kong now return home to face defending champions Japan on Saturday, a side who overwhelmed them 94-5 last year en route to claiming Asia’s place at World Cup 2011.

BlitzBokke take HK7s Plate

South Africa won the Plate at a cold and slippery Hong Kong Stadium last night.

In the process the BlitzBokke earned 16 Series points after beating Australia 26-19 in a pulsating Final.

Bernard Foley and Hamish Angus (2) scored for Australia but two from Sibusiso Sithole and one each from Cecil Afrika and Branco du Preez clinched the victory for the 2011 USA Sevens Cup winners.

South Africa was earlier eliminated from the Cup challenge by nemisis Fiji who won in extra-time (24 – 19) when they, somewhat controversially scored the ‘golden try.’

What if…

However, many fans of the BlitzBokke will be wondering what might have been had the referee spotted an apparent knock on in extra-time of their thrilling Cup quarterfinal against Fiji.

With the scores locked at 19-all, a Fijian player was tackled and appeared to have lost the ball forward, only for the referee to wave play on. They scored (against the run of play) from the resulting move to deliver a cruel knockout blow to the gutsy South Africans.

Speaking to coach Paul Treu at the Awards Dinner last night, he expressed his satisfaction about the referee’s decision to allow play to continue.  “I reviewed the footage afterward and I’m happy with the referee’s decision,” he said.

They played above expectation

A nevertheless proud Treu was full of praise for the huge effort from his players:

I could not have asked for more from them. They gave it everything they got and we were very unfortunate against Fiji. The injuries to Paul and Bernardo meant we were down to ten players and as a result, the guys just had to shoulder on, which they did in splendid fashion.

We will have a lot of sore bodies during the next couple of days and we will therefore have to take it somewhat easy during the week in Adelaide.”

The Springbok Sevens management team has made two injury-forced changes to his squad for the next HSBC Sevens World Series tournament in Adelaide. Paul Jordaan and Bernardo Botha both suffered leg injuries on the second day and played no further part in tournament, reducing the South Africans to ten players and forcing Treu to field almost the same line-up for the remaining matches.

The pair has left for home while MJ Mentz and Pieter Engelbrecht have left South Africa on Sunday evening to join the team in Adelaide.

Meanwhile the Series top scorer Cecil Afrika (pictured above) was last night awarded the Lesley Williams Trophy as the tournament’s Best & Fairest player.  Other players who made the judges’ short-list and who received an honourable mention include: Tim Mickleson (NZ), Tom Josefu (Samoa), Tomasi Cama (NZ), Philip Mack (Canada) and Frank Halai (NZ).

Mexico to join HK 7s Fiesta

(This story initially appeared on our sister-website BlitzBokke.com)

The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) today announced the 24 international teams taking part in the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2011.

This year the iconic Hong Kong Sevens march past will feature some south of the border flair as the Hong Kong Sevens welcomes Mexico to the fiesta.

Mexico is the first new competing team for the Hong Kong Sevens since Madagascar appeared in 2006.

Invited by the International Rugby Board to compete in Hong Kong, Mexico becomes the 49th country to compete at the Hong Kong Sevens in the 35 years since the inception of the event.

Mexico is also the first team from Central America to participate in the world-famous Hong Kong Sevens. The Hong Kong leg will be Mexico Sevens’ only participation on the IRB World Sevens Series 2010/2011.

This year’s Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens also sees the return of Spain for the first time since 1998, while Malaysia returns for the first time since 2003.

The 24-team line-up for 2011 Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens are:

The 12 core teams participating in the IRB Sevens World Series 2010/11

Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, USA and Wales.

Seven other teams from outside the region will join the Core teams

Canada, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Tonga and Zimbabwe.

Regional teams

China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The inclusion of the regional teams again demonstrates the Hong Kong Sevens’ traditional role of supporting the development of Asian rugby.

Mexico’s participation in the Hong Kong leg of this year’s Series gives them an opportunity to compete at an international level in preparation for the upcoming Rugby Sevens competition in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara later in the year,” said IRB Sevens Manager Beth Coalter.

With twenty-four teams in Hong Kong there is a wider range of team strengths to compete against and together with Hong Kong’s renowned atmosphere, the experience will go a long way to further assist Mexico’s preparations”, added Coalter (pictured below).

Hong Kong’s unique role as the only World Series event to host 24 teams, (with correspondingly more series points on offer over the weekend), and as the home of the largest prize purse in international rugby, ensures another thrilling weekend of rugby action played before 40,000 spectators in a highly festive atmosphere.

All we can add to this report is:

TEQUILA!

HK7s: Cheers Credit Suisse?

The world most-popular Sevens Rugby tournament may this year say goodbye to long-time sponsor Credit Suisse.

The banking group all but secured the continued existence of the Hong Kong Sevens when they came on board in 1998. The world’s economies were going through a hard time and sponsors willing to offer corporate financial support were few and far between.

In fact, the Swiss-based banking group didn’t only help maintain the tournament but, together with co-title sponsor Cathay Pacific, assisted with making the Hong Kong Sevens the premier stop on the Sevens World Series circuit.

Credit Suisse’s sponsorship agreement with the Hong Kong RFU concludes after this year’s event and all indications are that it will not be renewed.

Howzit HSBC

The International Rugby Board (IRB) last year welcomed another banking group HSBC as title sponsor of the 8-city World Sevens Series.

Since the beginning of the season, tournaments in Dubai (UAE) and George (SA) were heavily branded in the red and white of title-sponsors HSBC.  The series was also re-branded as the HSBC Sevens World Series.  However, because one of the co-sponsors of the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens is also a banking conglomorate, HSBC’s branding will not be seen around the city or as part of their promotional campaign.

Should the HKRFU decide to say thank you and goodbye to Credit Suisse this year, the Swiss-based group will exit knowing that the 2011 Hong Kong stop  had the almost-ignominious title of the only tournament NOT to be branded in the colours of the Series title-sponsors.

Come 2012, perhaps we will see the city branded as the home of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

Federer calls on Hong Kong

I couldn’t help but see the irony in Roger Federer‘s fleeting visit to Hong Kong today.

The news of the Credit Suisse brand-ambassador’s news conference in the city came as rival banking group HSBC was unveiled as the very first official sponsor of the International Rugby Board’s Sevens World Series.  Of course, Credit Suisse is also a co-sponsor of the Cathay Pacific Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens, popularly regarded as the best tournament on the 8-city world circuit.

Federer also took time to visit the Nesbitt Centre, where students were attending a coaching session sponsored by Credit Suisse.  The Nesbitt Centre is a non-profit organisation that provides English-speaking programs for adults with intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong.

As part of their partnership agreement with Roger Federer, Credit Suisse has committed a significant annual contribution to the player’s Roger Federer Foundation which is dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and to promoting education, sports and play, especially in Africa.  Federer, whose mother is of South African birth, has often visited the country and contributed to such programs via his Foundation.

Hong Kong Sevens 2011

(Source: Blitzbokke.com)

No sooner had the 2009/2010 season ended, then the International Rugby Board (IRB) released the dates for the 2010/2011 Sevens World Series season.

Despite attempts from other cities to lure the SA leg to their corner of the Republic, the IRB has confirmed that the beautiful city of George will once again host the Emirates Airline SA Sevens tournament for the ninth time on 10 – 11 December at Outeniqua Park.

According to the new IRB Sevens World Series calendar for 2010/11, the World Series will visit five continents over a busy six month period. The 12th season of the popular World Series kicks off on 3-4 December in Dubai, followed by the South African event at George a week later and it will reach a climax at Edinburgh in Scotland on 28-29 May 2011.

The one change from the 2009/10 schedule is that Australia’s tournament in Adelaide reverts back to the weekend after the Hong Kong Sevens.

The two previous Series campaigns were both decided on the last day of the eight tournament showpiece, with the Springbok Sevens lifting the title for the first time in 2009 and Samoa doing the same just a few days ago at Murrayfield, after they beat England in a dramatic semi-final clash which included two periods of extra-time.

Delhi 2010

In announcing the new World Series schedule, the IRB also confirmed the competition dates for Sevens at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in India. The Sevens rugby competition will take place over two days on 11-12 October in Delhi.

Steven Roos, Tournament Director of the Emirates Airline SA Sevens, said the thrills of the past Series have already sparked a lot of interest in the George event.

“The Emirates Airline SA Sevens is already a landmark event on our rugby calendar, but the tournament continues to grow in stature. SARU, the City of George and our other sponsors are again looking forward to another hugely successful and entertaining international event,”said Roos.

Japan vs. Hong Kong: What a finish!

With one foot already in the door, high-flying Japan is confident of sealing its berth at IRB Rugby World Cup 2011 when they take on Hong Kong in their final game of the HSBC Asian Five Nations (HSBC A5N) Top Five competition in Tokyo on Saturday.

In the second match of the weekend, Kazakhstan finds itself in the unique position of either finishing as A5N runners-up and entering the cross-continental play-off for RWC 2011 or facing relegation to Division I against Korea.

Japan only need a point from their final match and as such, even a draw will do. But this will be furthest from the mind of coach John Kirwan who is demanding a complete 80-minute performance from his team.

Kirwan made three changes to the team that thrashed Kazakhstan 101-7 last week for the HSBC Asian Five Nations finale against Hong Kong on Saturday. Ryu Holani returns at No. 8, Alisi Tupuailei is named on the wing and Shinsuke Nakamura starts at tighthead as Japan look to maintain their perfect record in the A5N and, more importantly, qualify for next year’s Rugby World Cup.

“We wanted to make sure Holani was 100 percent right and we need to see how Nakamura has improved,” Kirwan said of the changes.

Holani’s return at No. 8 – his last cap was in November 2008 – means Masakazu Toyota shifts from No. 8 to No. 6. Elsewhere the team is pretty much the side that started against South Korea and Kazakhstan.

“We want to go to the World Cup so we have picked the best team,” Kirwan said.

Shota Horie lines up at hooker with Hisateru Hirashima and Nakamura either side of him. Hitoshi Ono, who will again lead the side, pairs up with Luke Thompson in the engine room with Touetsu Taufa at openside. Fumiaki Tanaka and Shaun Webb carry on at halfback with the Suntory pair of Ryan Nicholas and Koji Taira in the centres, Kosuke Endo on the wing and Goshi Tachikawa at fullback.

Japan goes into the game needing just a point to book its place in Pool A in New Zealand. But that didn’t stop Kirwan from having a few harsh words for his team after what he believed was a less-than-satisfactory captain’s run on Friday.

“I am not happy with the quality of training. I just hope we play better than we train,” he said.

Hong Kong still in with a chance

Hong Kong arrives in Tokyo with high hopes of grabbing the runner-up spot and keeping the dream alive of qualifying for the World Cup through the cross-continental play-offs.

Hong Kong is currently on 12 points and need to beat Japan or grab a bonus point by scoring four tries or finishing within a seven-point margin of defeat to secure the runner-up slot. Failing this, they will have to hope that Kazakhstan either lose to South Korea in the other game on Saturday in Incheon, Korea, or if they win, fail to pick up a bonus point.

It will be all about us performing in Tokyo and not about how others are playing,” said Hong Kong head coach Dai Rees. “Our problem so far has been that we are underachieving in terms of ball retention. As far as defence goes, I’m happy. We have conceded only two tries so far this season.”

One of those tries was an intercept try which earned the Arabian Gulf a 16-9 victory that put paid to Hong Kong’s plans of going to Tokyo with the runner-up slot secured.

Hong Kong defeated South Korea 32-8 in their opening game and defeated Kazakhstan 19-15 two weeks ago. Both wins came at home.

“If someone at the beginning of the tournament had said you would beat South Korea and Kazakhstan and you would be disappointed, I wouldn’t have believed him,” Rees said after Hong Kong’s win over Kazakhstan.

Hong Kong have made a number of changes to that side due to injury and the absence of veteran forward Nigel Clarke who will be getting married in England on Saturday.

In the front row, an injury in training to tighthead prop Nigel Hobler has resulted in youngster Alex Ng Wai-shing being drafted into the hot seat. James Stokes comes in at lock to replace Clarke while in the backrow Kwok Ka-chun will replace the injured Nick Hewson at blindside.

Up-and-coming youngster Kenneth Hsieh Chun-hang will win his first cap and start at scrum-half with regular Tim Alexander on the bench. Alexander has been in the wars, and Rees wants to give him as much time as possible to recover. The rest of the backline will be the same, but on the bench, there will be a few new faces including flanker Renaud Chavanis, centre Tsang Hing-hung and winger Adam Raby who gets his first opportunity this season.

Japanese counterpart Kirwan will have the luxury of selecting from a full squad. He has given every player in an extended squad a run this season, and is happy with what he has seen so far.

“When we get over the advantage line early and get quick ball we are pretty hard to stop,” Kirwan said.

This will be the worry for Hong Kong as they bid to clinch second spot in the Top Five.

But Hong Kong isn’t the only team with worries heading into the final week’s action. In Incheon, a disappointed Korea team will be throwing everything into a last-ditch effort to repel visiting Kazakhstan and avoid what would have been unthinkable just four weeks ago – relegation to next year’s Division I championship.

Kazakhstan meanwhile face a conundrum: how to approach the match against Korea where a bonus point will see them off to Uruguay for the RWC repechage while a loss and conceding a bonus point will see them relegated to Division I.

The game is “win or die” according to Kazakhstan captain and No. 8 Timur Mashurov, “Korea will fight for every ball, for every cm of the pitch”.

Fortunately for the hosts, Korea have star lock You Young Nam back after his four-week match ban was reduced to three weeks on appeal. You was named the top player in his position in Japan’s professional Top League last season. You’s appearance could be decisive in a match that is likely to be won or lost up front.

Kazakhstan coach Evgeniy Zuev’s objective is for his side “to play more with the ball. We need to get more share of the ball from scrums and lineouts than we have so far in the competition. But most importantly in the last week of the A5N I want the team to demonstrate what they can do and show how people from Kazakhstan can play rugby.”

Kazakhstan will be relying on Mashurov and star flanker Anton Rudoy this weekend in what promises to be a tense encounter in Incheon.

“It is still too far to qualify for World Cup even if we get second place there is a long process for us to navigate. But as for relegation, it is just behind the corner”, added captain Mashurov, indicating the focus for this weekend in Incheon is firmly on retaining a spot in Asia’s top tier rugby competition, the HSBC Asian 5 Nations.

24 000th try scored at HK Sevens

I am always amazed at the detailed statistical analysis of every game that is circulated to us in the media enclosure.  Based on that, it is probably not unbelievable that the International Rugby Board has records of every single try ever scored since the inception of the Sevens World Series.

At the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens this past weekend, Russian Vladimir Ostroushko had the honour of scoring the 24 000th try.  Try saying that a few times!  Here is that try as well as some other landmarks that were passed in Hong Kong:
