|

The International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series is contested over 8 tournaments. As in previous years the
eight tournaments are packaged into 4 pairs with two tournaments played a week apart. The Sevens RWC in Dubai is
neatly positioned halfway throughout the IRB Sevens Series 2008/2009.
Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and George (South Africa) are again the first pair of tournaments, with Dubai again
staging the Series opener at the end of November 2008, four months before also hosting the Rugby World Cup Sevens
2009 for both men and women.

The Dubai Sevens was initially started by a small group of British
expatriates who, starved of some of their favourite sports, wanted to
start something to keep active as well as bring some of their culture
to their adopted country. The tournament was so successful
amongst the expatriates as well as locals and businesses that the
Dubai Rugby Sevens has now become an integral part of the Dubai
way of life. Dubai Sevens is officially sponsored by Emirates Airlines
and enjoys the support of various multinational companies. The event
is broadcast live to various countries and is widely covered by the
world press.
Building upon the tremendous success of Dubai Sevens 2007, the first Sevens Tournament of the IRB Series
2008/2009 is shaping up to be even bigger and better with a new, purpose-built venue being developed as the new
home of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens.
