The Southern African Association in Hong Kong annually organises a short hike on the island of Lantau. Lantau is Hong Kong's largest island that also includes the man-made island upon which Chek Lap Kok Airport is situated. The hike starts at the Mui Wo ferry pier and takes in the scenic coastal trails along the Southern part of Lantau Island. (See the pictures below) The walk is quite unique in that, while walking, one can see the tall skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island West in the distance while enjoying the tranquil Lantau environment. The walk ends on the beautiful Lower Cheung Sha Beach, particularly at the restaurant called Die Stoep, famed for it's Mediterranean & South African cuisine. Owner Mei and her staff also lay on a scrumptious spread of salads, home-baked breads and an array of spreads/dips.To cool off and quench their thirsts, the hikers (and non-hikers) have a choice of South African white and red wines as well as icy-cold Windhoek and Tafel Lager. However, the main reason why the hikers make the trek to Lower Cheung Sha Beach, and the non-hikers starve themselves for an entire day, is the 2 whole lambs that are prepared in typical South African Spit-Braai style. Howzit Hong Kong can vouch for the fact that a most enjoyable time was had by all, including Die Stoep's resident canines! Bruce Fowler always extends an invitation to the local British community by way of the Royal Overseas League and we were told by an Englishman at our table that "there are so much grub here tonight!" Thanks must go out to Bruce Fowler who once again put this marvelous event together. We saw him catching forty winks on the ferry back to Central and I'm sure at least 20 of those were spent thinking about what he can do next time around to make it even better! (It had nothing to do with the Windhoek Lager of course!)
