HOWZIT HONG KONG !
A guide to Hong Kong for South Africans... by South Africans!
What's happening in the SA community in HK
Howzit-HongKong is a website for Saffas who live in Hong Kong and those planning to visit the Special Administrative Region
as HK is also known.  As a South African living in Hong Kong, I often meet fellow-Saffas in and around the city. Just yesterday
(February 28, 2010) I bumped into ex-South African middle-distance runner
Johan Landsman at a Giordano store in Tsim
Sha Tsui who is in town on business.  I once shared an elevator at the airport with two ladies from Gauteng and it's rather
funny because I knew they were Saffas because they were carrying a plastic Shoprite shopping bag... With a bag of
Mealiemeal!
Most of the time I end up sharing some travel tips on what to see and do in Hong Kong, where the interesting markets and
restaurants are, etc. This website is the result of all those chats and is neatly categorised on the Blog site.

The count-down to Sevens-week has started

As we report on the Blog, the countdown to Hong Kong's
BIGGEST sporting event, the 2010 Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse
Hong Kong Sevens has started.  However, next week not only
welcomes the celebration of Sevens rugby, but also Women's
Sevens, Rugby Tens as well as the annual Kowloon Rugby
Fest.
HK's rugby-week will also see an influx of rugby legends who
will either play in the various tournaments or speak at one of the
many rugby functions that will take place all over the city.
South Africa's very own "voice of rugby"
Hugh Bladen will be
speaking at the SAAHK's annual Sevens Dinner, while Fijian
Sevens legend
Waisale Serevi will make his appearance at the
GFI HKFC Tens.  Argentinian 15's and 7's star
Augustin Pichot
will return to HK after many years as manager of his country's
Sevens Team.
Sevens was recently welcomed into the Olympic Family and to
crown this joyous announcement, the head of the IOC, Mr
Jacque Rogge will join the IRB's successful bid team at the
Hong Kong Stadium.
In a nut-shell, the 2010 Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong
Sevens will be an extraordinary event come March 26.
Hope to see you there!

Hong Kong, 'n Spesiale Administratiewe Streek
nuut.
As gevolg van die hope brosjures, soek menige
besoekers meesal die 'nuwe Hong Kong' uit...
die baie moderne Malls en ander
toeriste-aantreklikhede ingesluit.
Hier by
Howzit-HongKong sal ons vir jou meer daarvan
probeer bring. Daar is niks soos persoonlike
The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens
The Sevens is undoubtedly the premier event on the Hong Kong sporting and social calendar.  Expatriate South Africans from all over the region are joined by their compatriots
from home (together with thousands of fans from around the world) for the biggest party of all 8 tournaments that make up the IRB Sevens World Series.  This Year's HK Sevens
takes place from 26-28 March 2010 at the Hong Kong Stadium.  While Howzit-HongKong has dedicated a lot of copy to the HK Sevens, please refer to our sister-website for
everything about the Springbok Sevens side and the Sevens World Series.  Click on the BlitzBokke.com banner below.
South Africans don't only
flock to Hong Kong for
transit, sightseeing or
the Sevens, they also
travel here to visit some
of the numerous trade
fairs hosted at the HKICC
in the city (Wan Chai) or
AsiaWorld Expo next to
Chek Lap Kok Airport.

Did you know...
Despite being located in the region
with the highest number of smokers
in the world (Asia), legislation in
Hong Kong makes it a mostly
smoke-free city.  The ban on
smoking covers bars, restaurants,
places of work, schools and
karaoke lounges, and extends to
outdoor places like beaches, sports
grounds and large swaths of public
parks.
Ek land op die lughawe.  Hoe kom ek tot by my hotel ?
opsies:

Kowloon se Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) of Hung Hom neem.

die New Territories.
langer.

Hong Kong's vibrant nightlife
While there are individual nightclubs, bars and restaurants all over the greater Hong Kong, there are about 6
distinct Party Districts.

On Hong Kong Island you can find the mother of them all...
Lan Kwai Fong (LKF) with the quaint but equally
vibrant
Soho in close proximity.  Wan Chai is a mere 2 MTR stations, or a 5-10 minute taxi ride away.

On Kowloon side, there is the Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) area with the
Ashley Road Bar/Restaurant area as it's
center, as well as the
East Tsim Sha Tsui Bar/Restaurant area right next to the Promenade.

More towards the heart of TST and rather hidden from the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Nathan Road you
can also find
Knutsford Terrace, consisting of mainly themed- restaurants and a few high-rise bars.

Lan Kwai Fong is frequented primarily by foreigners as well as the trendy, upwardly mobile who mostly work
in Central and remains THE place to see and be seen.

Wan Chai is (in)famous as a 'girlie-bar' district that is dotted with scantily-clad girls trying to entice
unexpected male tourists, young and old into their entablishments!
